Dr. Katie Rohrig has been with Family Vet Animal Hospital as a vet since July 2009 when she graduated from the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. Katie has a large interest in quality preventative medicine. Since she views her pets as family and knows many people’s pets are family she wants to help maximize the time and quality of life that people are able to have with their pets. Katie is also expanding her knowledge in pet dental services, pocket pets, exotic animal care and small mammal medicine.
Formerly Katie Rigney, she is a hometown girl and has been part of our clinic family since she was 16, when she started as a pet hotel attendant and veterinary assistant. Katie worked with us after school and on the weekends all through high school and during her breaks in college and vet school. Katie says she can’t remember ever wanting to be anything other than a vet. Animals have always been a huge part of her life. She has been riding horses as long as she could walk, or maybe longer, and began showing at the age of 5. Katie also was active with the Pittsylvania County 4-H livestock club where she showed lambs, steers, and hogs at the local show each spring.
Katie is involved in the community as a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church and the Junior Wednesday Club. She was also a member of the Leadership Southside Class XIX sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Katie has also been involved with leadership within our profession by serving as a VVMA director and participating in the AVMA Future Leaders Program.
In her spare time Katie enjoys spending time with her husband Will. Katie and Will enjoy hiking, canoeing, and playing with their German Shorthaired Pointers Tillie and Birdie. Katie and Tillie enjoy participating in AKC agility trials together. Katie’s 3 horses Hook, Keri and Sniper are a huge part of her life. Katie mostly enjoys trail riding with her mom, but also enjoys showing in Ranch Riding. Katie also has a house cat named Pixie who is full of playful energy and loves to cuddle!
